The Temptation
to Be Spectacular
Then the devil took him to the holy
city and had him stand on the highest point of the temple. "If you
are the Son of God," he said, "throw yourself down. For it is
written: bHe will command his angels concerning you, and they will lift
you up in their hands, so that you do not strike your foot against a
stone.'" Jesus answered him, "It is also written, bDo not put
the Lord your God to the test.'" -Matthew 4:5-7
Satan's ploy to destroy Jesus was a ploy
he uses on us every day: go it alone...be spectacular...draw attention to
yourself and exalt yourself in doing so. The world we live in celebrates
and even worships this kind of lifestyle. We are encouraged to fight for
our own success, to show how awesome we are, even at the cost of others'
failure, pain and embarrassment.
In these verses we see Satan tempting
Jesus with the same "luscious fruit." The reality is that Satan
is twisted-he's confused by Jesus' character and intentions. God created
us to be in relationship with him. He created us to need him and need
others in order to grow and strengthen. Being dependent on Jesus and
interdependent on others is how God has planned for us to grow. Remember
that the early church was strong because of its unity and dependence on
the members of its body. Each person has a vital role.
Think about
this: Do you ever find yourself in the
process of glorifying yourself and pursuing things on your own? Is it
hard for you to depend on others? Some of us have been hurt by others and
this makes us want to keep to ourselves. But think of Jesus: he was
denied by his own disciple and betrayed by another. He was beaten and
cursed and murdered on our behalf. Consider how you might move towards
dependence in your own life. What are some steps you could take?

In the Real
World
Ever since Adam and Eve first realized they
were naked in the garden, we've been covering ourselves up with clothing.
Hundreds of years have passed, and today we find ourselves pushing the
limits! It seems pretty obvious that our culture values promiscuity and
"sexiness" over modesty. Is it really so bad? Does God care
what we wear? Should we?
As a Christian guy or girl, what role
does modesty play in your life? Is it just a crutch that prevents you
from fitting in? Or can it be a guideline for true beauty? Check out
these two articles on the topic. Then email and tell us what you
think!
