talk about it
Every
generation has its soundtrack. What's yours? What kind of music fills your
mind and informs your heart? If you're a Christian, is it cool to listen to
mainstream music? Does it matter who the music comes from if you dig it and
it makes you feel happy, connected and alive?
We want to know what you think! Talk about
it with other SpringHill campers, staff and counselors on the SpringHill MySpace page. Or, if you
have another question you'd like to discuss, email us.

to do and 23% have too much free time. And 23% say you never get bored!
·
Only 18% of those surveyed said that if they felt bored this summer they'd
be willing to try to talk to God and ask him to show them what they could
do.

does God really
care about my music?
And this is my prayer: that your love may abound more
and more in knowledge and depth of insight, so that you may be able to
discern what is best and may be pure and blameless for the day of
Christ… —Philippians 1:9-10
What’s playing on your iPod? Maybe it seems like a non-issue, but
what you choose to listen to is a decision nonetheless. Truth is,
it’s a decision that can affect your mind and heart. Are you
discerning what is best? Who decides what’s “best”
anyway?
In this letter to the Philippians, Paul equates being “able to
discern what is best” with growing in love. The bigger your love
gets for God and others and yourself, the more knowledge and insight
you’ll have, and the more likely you are to make good decisions
about things. You’ll want to do things that honor God, honor others
(like your parents!) and make you deep-down happy. Ultimately, this could
mean making different choices about what you’re listening to.
Think about this: Does the
music you listen to affect your mood, your thoughts or your feelings? Is
your love for God, others and yourself reflected in the music you listen
to? Should it be? Why do you think God cares about your music choices? Or
does he? What would make you better at discerning what’s best?

rapper Heath McNease unplugged
If
you’re a fan of hip-hop (or even if you’re not), Christian rap
artist Heath McNease has some funny and enlightening things to say about
his music, his faith and how much God loves us. Be sure to see Heath
McNease LIVE this fall at the SpringHill Music Festival!!
Bounce: Why do you
like hip-hop?
Heath: What intrigued me about it is that
you don’t have to have any sort of musical gifts. I was always a good
writer and putting words in the structured format of hip-hop was something
I felt like I could do. Learning to write in that structure was tough for
me in the beginning, though, because I wanted to say as many words as I
possibly could. But then people were like, is that rapping? He’s just
talking . . . a lot.
Bounce: What do
you dig most about the Bible?
Heath: My favorite part of the Bible is
Isaiah 53 where there's that very familiar, prophetic statement about what
Jesus is going to go through on our behalf. It's the chapter that says he'll
be wounded for our transgressions, bruised for iniquities and by his
striped we are healed. . . Those verses mean more to me than any others
because the prophet was saying this is what’s going to happen —
Jesus was doing it FOR us.
Bounce: How can we
do great things for God if we don’t get to be on stage or have some
special talent?
Heath: If you say, “I don’t
have a ‘thing.’ I’m not good in math; I’m horrible
at gymnastics; I’m really hairy.” It’s okay. You
don’t have to have a “thing.” You don’t have to be
an amazing musician. Whatever it is that your doing you'll be succeeding
and excelling at it if you're putting Christ first. If I'm a janitor, I'll
be the best because I know this is where God has me for a reason.
Bounce: Do you have any thoughts for
campers who don’t feel as close to God at home as they do when
they’re at SpringHill?
Heath: God’s a forgiving God and he knows we’re
going to make a million and one mistakes. When camp is over and that
feeling of how awesome camp was starts to dwindle a little and the mundane,
everyday things start to slip in, you maybe slip into old habits.
[Remember,] there’s absolutely nothing you can do to make God love
you more. There’s absolutely nothing you can do to make him love you
less. That’s the freedom we have.
Catch Heath's video interview online; then, come see him live on stage at
SpringHill!

Over the Rooftops from Sevenglory
Sevenglory offers solid message-driven rock and roll, covering themes
like our dependency on God (pop track "Fall Apart," with its
simmering organ), encouragement (the hooky "Really Free," with
its soaring melody line flying high over the poppin' bass ), and our need
for His guidance. Their new album to be released this fall brings
Sevenglory's live excitement to the studio with some solid hooks, great
phrasing, and memorable tunes. Get a sneak preview of the new stuff (and
a big dose of old favorites) when you see them live at the SpringHill Music Festival and on the Sevenglory website.
Love on the Radio from Alabaster Box
If you haven't heard this band, get ready for something special. The New Zealand
girl-fronted Alabaster Box brings it to America
with quippy little hooks and a great mix of sound in their newest album Love on the Radio. A little U2, a
little Delirious, a little Daniel's Window makes for a fun sound and a
great addition to any iPod — or music
festival. That's right, they're coming to SpringHill September 22 and 23. Don't miss it! (In the
meantime, check out their website for
a preview.)
