giving thanks by giving back
Freely you have received; freely give.
–Matthew 10:8b
When someone gives you a gift, the right thing to do
is say, “Thank you!” You can say “thank you” in words, with your voice
or in a note. Or you can say “thank you” another way, especially if the
gift is not an object, but something like time and attention, a smile
or “I forgive you.” You can say “thank you” by giving time and
attention to someone else, smiling at someone who looks sad or lonely,
or saying, “I forgive you” to someone who has hurt you. By doing this,
you don’t just receive a gift, you keep the gift moving by becoming a
giver, too. That’s the kind of “thank you” God likes best.
Some questions and answers
to share with your parents: What special gift (that is not an
object) have you received lately? How could you thank the person who
gave it to you? Who in your class or neighborhood needs the gift of
your friendship? What holds you back from giving this gift freely?
