Ordinary
Heroes, Extraordinary Strength
A new series launches on TV this Fall called Heroes. Maybe you've seen
the previews; maybe you plan to watch it. The basic premise seems bound to
make for good TV: average teenagers who think they are just like everyone
else wake up one morning with incredible abilities and the realization
that they were born to be extraordinary. What if you were born with the
potential and ability to be a hero? Does it take superpower for one life
to make a difference? Imagine if just staying committed to
God day by day could change the world. Check out this issue of Bounce and
discover what standing firm in your faith can do. Did you experience God
in a real way this summer? Don't let this new "super power" in
your life fade away - learn how you can be a hero, too!

Standing Firm
Be on your guard; stand firm in the
faith; be men of courage; be strong. -1Cor 16:13
Paul's letter to the Corinthians can be
an encouragement to Christians today. The church in Corinth needed to be encouraged to keep
what they had learned close to their hearts. Paul couldn't stay with them
and so he wrote to them about the truth of Jesus and following him.
Similar to the Church in Corinth, many of you
have just finished an awesome week at SpringHill and are eager to share
about it with your friends. Let this verse remind you; don't forget what
you've learned. Hold it close to your heart; guard it and protect it and
remember it. Paul encourages the church to stand firm, be courageous and
strong, and to keep a watchful eye out for danger.
Think about
this: What might you need to watch out for?
Perhaps it's laziness; letting what you've learned and shared this summer
at camp just pass over your head. Maybe it's old habits that you've
committed to fight. Satan certainly desires for you to drop your guard
and not follow through with good commitments you've made. Just like the
early church, we have plenty of obstacles in the way of growth. Keeping
your eyes on Jesus and staying rooted in His word will help you guard
against the things that would seek to tear you down. As you go back to
school this Fall, remember the wonderful things that God allowed you to
be a part of this summer and stay strong!

Be sure to put your feet in the right
place, then stand firm.

Pass all the pebbles in your path and you will find you have crossed the

You've Got to Be Kidding
Standing
firm in the face of great adversity, challenge or tragedy doesn't
just happen. Consider these ordinary people who have triumphed over
extraordinary circumstances simply by committing their lives to Jesus and
staying strong:
» Bethany Hamilton: This young, world-class surfer
who lost her arm in a terrifying shark
attack has turned her tragedy into an opportunity to speak
out about her faith in God and get back on her board. Check out
Bethany's
website and her book Soul Surfer.
» Eric Liddell:
Favored to win the 100-meter race in the 1924 Olympics, Eric
refused to run a qualifying heat scheduled on a Sunday and
lost the gold. More important than victory was the chance
to honor God and not to compromise. Check it out in
the movie Chariots
of Fire and the biography Pure Gold.
» Corrie ten Boom: During
World War II, Corrie's family provided refuge for Jewish people escaping
the Nazis. Even with their lives at stake, the ten Booms never
refused to help. In 1944 they were betrayed and taken to prison. After
many horrifying months in a concentration camp, a clerical error led to
Corrie's release. Her book The Hiding Place
reveals how miracles can happen when an ordinary person stands firm
in her faith.
