A Rock and an Island

All the believers were one in heart and mind. No one claimed that any of his possessions was his own, but they shared everything they had. -Acts 4:32

The early church was made up of followers of Jesus that depended on each other and cared for each person as he/she had need. They shared everything. Nothing belonged to them. In a sense, they were totally dependent on each other. What about independence? The very country we live in would not exist if it was not for men who fought for independence. But do we take independence too far?

The duo Simon & Garfunkel made this lyric famous: "I touch no one and no one touches me. I am a rock, I am an island." This says a lot about our culture, about being self-reliant and independent, about believing it better to go it alone than to have the support of others.

The Acts verse looks pretty strange in comparison. What is God saying about being a Christian in community? Why does God want this for us? It's because we have been created to know God intimately. The very idea of relationships is fashioned after our relationship to God. Even God has a relationship within himself (Father, Son, Spirit).

Think about this: What things do you do to set yourself apart from others? Why are those things important to you? Do you think God wants you to go this life alone? Are you an island or are you "one in heart and mind" with other believers? God loves you and wants you to experience him in the community he's created: his Church. How you can get connected in community and make yourself available to those who are in need?

Now Playing

The Best Worst-Case Scenario by Fair: Aaron Sprinkle (Poor Old Lu) is back at it again, and this time he's not producing. This album is an excellent piece of artful rock. Thoughtful, quirky and soothing, with a knack for honesty. If you've never heard Sprinkle, this is a must-hear record. Read a longer review of this new release or check out the band's website.

Pro Pain by Mars ILL: Finally in stores after numerous delays, Pro Pain is a worth-the-wait hip-hop thrill. Called "Angry, intelligent and good" by Relevant Magazine, this album is a great pick for any bhop enthusiast. Listen to sample tracks or check out the band's website.

Define the Great Line by Underoath: Following a successful debut, Underoath is back with more growling, wailing guitars and drive. Not for the faint at heart, these six Florida boys have become men with the new release. Special attention has been given to growth, both inward and outward. The disc also comes with a sweet bonus DVD. Visit Underoath's website or see if you can crack the code to enter  www.definethegreatline.com.

The life I touch for good or ill will touch another life, and that in turn another, until who knows where the trembling stops or in what far place my touch will be felt.

You've Got to Be Kidding

When Hurricane Katrina hit the Gulf Coast, tens of thousands of people lost their homes and many were separated from their families. Through heroic efforts of volunteerism and caring and community, many lives have been touched and homes rebuilt. Here are a few examples of the incredible difference "dependence" can make:

» According to hurricanehousing.org, within six weeks after Hurricane Katrina hit, more than 30,000 people were given shelter and a chance to start over by total strangers who opened up their homes.

» On the Gulf Coast, nearly 300 homes are under construction in an all-volunteer effort through Habitat for Humanity. Volunteers come from all over the U.S. at their own expense to lend a hand.

» An all-volunteer effort, Emergency Communities has served over 200,000 nourishing meals to residents and volunteers in St. Bernard Parish since December 2005.

To learn more about volunteer efforts still going on in the Gulf region and to see how you might help, visit the Network for Good website.
