Hear Ye, Hear Ye...It's Summer at SpringHill!

Okay, so it's summer everywhere, but at SpringHill it's really summer. Gargantuan lake plunges off the blob, screaming flights down the infamous zipline, kamakazi-like rides down the gusher, and then castle siege and crud wars and Real Life and heart-thumping live bands and s'mores at the campfires and search-your-heart small groups and the kind of change-your-life relationships with campers, counselors and maybe even the God of the universe that you really never saw coming but make the experience perhaps the most meaningful, awe-inspiring experience you've ever had. And that's just all in one week. If this was the week you experienced a SpringHill summer, congratulations! We hope it was your absolute best week of 2006. And if you're still waiting for your week to arrive, we can't wait to meet you! In the meantime, get a little taste of a SpringHill summer in this issue of Bounce...and tell a friend. They'll thank you.

Get a Glimpse of Real Life at SpringHill This Summer

Do any of these characters sound familiar?

Calvin: Everyone wants the same things - happiness, good looks, popularity - but we can't all have them. Only a lucky few get them and it's never me. It's stupid to even try for anything in this world. Some of us are just doomed to fail. I hate it, but there's nothing I can do about it.

Samantha: My parents provide really well for me. I guess you'd say that I have a pretty perfect life, really. If I could have anything, I think I'd want to have this same life for my family someday. I mean, it's what anyone would want, right?

Truman: I don't think anyone knows what it's like for me. I am not going to end up like my parents. I am going to do everything in my power to be different. No matter what it takes, I'm going to be different.

Grace: I try not to think a lot about how my life could be better. I try to just be thankful for what I have. I keep to myself a lot because I've let people know me before and they've just turned on me. It isn't worth it.

If you're coming to New Frontiers or InPursuit this summer you'll find out a lot more about what real life is like (and how it can be different) for these four characters. If any of them sound familiar, maybe you'll find out how real life can be different for you, too. Don't miss summer at SpringHill!

Defeating the Giants

He looked David over and saw that he was only a boy, ruddy and handsome, and he despised him. He said to David, "Am I a dog, that you come at me with sticks?" And the Philistine cursed David by his gods. "Come here," he said, "and I'll give your flesh to the birds of the air and the beasts of the field!" David said to the Philistine, "You come against me with sword and spear and javelin, but I come against you in the name of the Lord Almighty, the God of the armies of Israel, whom you have defied. This day the Lord will hand you over to me, and I'll strike you down and cut off your head. - 1 Samuel 17:42-46

You've probably heard how the story goes: David, the boy, defeats Goliath, the monster, with a simple stone. End of story. But is it the whole story? David, small and unassuming, was no soldier; he was a shepherd. Yet God chose him to lead the nation of Israel and make it prosper.

When we think of people with success and power, who comes to mind? People with fame, fortune and prestige? Kings, presidents, infidels? We probably don't think of a little boy with five smooth stones. Yet David had the power to defeat a giant because he had the power of the Lord Almighty.

There are numerous times that we feel unimportant, unable to accomplish anything, and downright weak. The story of David (and countless others throughout the Bible) shows us that strength doesn't come from our own muscles and brainpower or abilities to intimidate - it comes from God. Having powerful faith means depending on God to do through us what he did through David. We spend too much time worrying we can't when God is waiting to show us he can.

Think about this: Is Jesus the King of your life or are you too worried about the "Goliaths" that you're presently facing? Do you believe that God can do powerful things through you? This summer let God show you how powerful he really is.

Now Playing

Eyes Open by Snow Patrol: Scottish indie rockers Snow Patrol are back with another refreshing, emotional album. With lots of instrumentation and imagination, Eyes Open delivers another dose of the Snow Patrol we fell in love with for Final Straw, their earlier release. Find more on Snow Patrol in Relevant Magazine.

Mockingbird by Derek Webb: Ex-Caedmon's Call frontman and more recently acclaimed singer/songwriter Derek Webb's new release, Mockingbird is a lyrically-dependable yet politically ambitious album. The soulful introspection is there, as well as the southern vocal schematic. A must-buy for Webb fans and spiritually aware activists. A perfect summer day is when the sun is shining, the breeze is blowing, the birds are singing, and the lawn mower is broken.

You've Got to Be Kidding

The sports world loves present-day "Davids" and their come-from-behind victories. Here are a few notable examples:

» The 1980 USA Men's Hockey team defeated goliath opponent, Russia, to win Olympic gold. Check out the movie Miracle to watch the story unfold.

» Unknown Jack Fleck defeated golf titan Ben Hogan in the 1955 U.S. Open.

» In the 2004 World Series, the Boston Red Sox defeat the New York Yankees in a come-from behind 7-game series after losing the first 3 games.

If you know a strange or interesting fact, email us. We could print it in the next issue of Bounce.
